Asterisk is a powerful open source telephony platform that runs on the Linux operating system. It provides standard business telephone system (PBX) features and functions. Asterisk platforms can be configured in clusters or stand alone with automated recovery for high-availability implementations.
Web Integration
Much like Apache/PHP provide a platform for web development, Asterisk provides a platform for developing and deploying voice applications. Asterisk includes a powerful scripting environment and can be extended via APIs and a powerful TCP/IP manager interface. It can be linked to SQL databases and can provide text-to-speech functionality using add-on third party software. Asterisk has an active development community and a wide variety of 3rd party add-on applications are available.
