A small network of Polycom Kirk Wireless DECT base stations and repeaters were installed to provide seamless wireless coverage throughout the companies’ offices and manufacturing floors.  The DECT technology allowed for greater coverage and a lower system cost then competing WiFi based wireless systems, due to it’s use of the 1.9Ghz frequency spectrum.  As the system operates in a different frequency then WiFi, it can be deployed in the same areas as WiFi networks without causing interference.

Unlike WiFi, the DECT standard was designed from the outset as a wireless digital voice standard, so it is optimized for voice communications and provides for seamless handoff between cells, as a user roams thought a facility.  Repeaters can be used to extend wireless coverage to remote areas of a facility, without additional wiring costs.

Production workers were provided with the industrial Kirk 4040 model wireless handset.  This handset features an IP 54 classification for resistance to dust and water in industrial environments.  Office workers were provided with the Kirk 5020 model wireless handset, which feature a sleek design and color screen.  Both handsets feature the built-in text messaging in addition to voicemail waiting indication and standard PBX call management features.  The reception desk, conference rooms and other select offices were provisioned with Polycom SoundPoint IP telephones, which include a full-duplex speakerphone and advanced call management features.

The client was provisioned with 8 channels on a fractional T1 line to their telecommunications provider. This digital connection allowed them to have high call quality and room to grow their capacity to 24 channels (simultaneous calls).

The employees of the firm each received a wireless Plantronics CT12 headset phone that allowed them to be on a call and roam anywhere within the company office and surrounding area. These phones feature onboard CallerID and a message waiting indicator lamp that indicates the presents of waiting voicemail messages. Employees can easily place, transfer and park calls from anywhere in the office.

The Plantronics phones were connected to Sipura ATA adapters that allow them to connect to the Asterisk PBX server. These adapters enable the phones to do three-way calling, call forwarding, last-call-return and a host of other vertical service features. Because the Sipura adapters are connected to the PBX server via the companies Ethernet data network, adding more phones does not require any new server hardware. This makes expanding the system much less expensive than with port-based proprietary systems.

The receptionist was provided with a web-based graphical user interface that shows the status of each staff member and line on the system. Drag-and-drop call transfers allow the receptionist to quickly route calls from their PC. Employees can also originate calls from within Microsoft Outlook using a free third-party TAPI integration utility. Unified messaging allows a voicemail user to receive copies of their voicemail within their email inbox. This allows users to archive old voicemail messages and easily search and retrieve old messages on their PC.

The client was looking for a telephone system that could grow with the business but was not going to cost a huge amount of money. What the client received was a system them met their operational goals and their price point.

In the late 90’s some states started to require that E911 functionality be provided for when installing PBX telephone systems. Regulations and requirements very by state. In Washington State, PBX phone systems are required to be E911 compatible in certain circumstances when installed in schools, or when installed in multi-tenant office buildings. This enables an emergency services operator to know not only the address of a caller, but also the building (if there are multiple buildings), floor and suite or room number from which a call originated. This information enables faster response to emergencies and helps to eliminate confusion about a caller’s exact location.

The Asterisk Open Source PBX provides a cost effective way of achieving E911 compatibility when used in conjunction with a telephone carrier that offers E911 database management services to its customers. This database management service consists of a reverse directory maintained by the customer, but residing with the carrier, that associates location information to private (DID) telephone numbers that the customer uses.

In order for E911 to function on an Asterisk PBX, each extension phone must be assigned a 10-digit DID number. This DID number is then registered with the telephone carrier (or contracted ALI database service provider) along with the location of the phone. An ISDN PRI link connects the Asterisk PBX to the carrier. This digital link utilizes a dedicated signaling channel (D-Channel) to handle call setup and signalling. It is the D-Channel that enables E911 functionality through the carrier. When a 911 call is placed on the PBX, Asterisk needs to be programmed to set the outbound CallerID (ANI) for the call to the registered DID for the calling extension. When the call reaches the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) this ANI number is matched with the DID number and location information which was pre-registered with the carrier (or contracted ALI database service provider). The exact location of the caller is then displayed to the emergency services operator.

The same method may also be used with Asterisk to provide E911 service when subscribing to services from an E911 enabled VoIP Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP).

Asterisk offers a cost effective way to implement E911 services, increasing safety and security within an organization. Even organizations that are not legally required to implement E911 can greatly benefit from its implementation.

VoiceIP Solutions was able to deploy an Open Source Asterisk PBX that included a simple BASH script to provide the needed functionality for under $5000, saving the client ~$35,000 on their telephone system.
